1948 Newspaper

A woman's work is never done!

This woman is cleaning the stairs of the Home Office while a man reads the official announcement of the birth of Prince Charles in 1948.

This comes from an old newspaper which I found in a charity shop.  Needless to say I was more interested in the other news and adverts than I was in the royal birth!

Pyrex - look at those prices!  (5 shillings = 25p)

Rationing was still in place for a while after the war, and I think that BU means bread unit - each person was allowed so many units per day during rationing.

Not the health advice we would be given today!

I prefer reading the "incidentals" in these old newspapers.  But here's a picture of the Royal party at the christening of Charles.

Have a great weekend.

Love, Liz

You are right; it is the advertisements and letters which truly show a time for how it was. I loved it when finding old newspapers under floors during renovation. The house prices are a hoot too.

There was one thing we found. After taking up floors in our house there was a mention of someone my husband was working for recently; Circa 1974. It was about his drink driving conviction. It just goes to show tour past always catches you up.

I enjoy seeing items from old newspapers, especially the ads. What seem so inexpensive to us today was probably expensive to them at that time. How I would like to find pieces of the Pyrex that is advertised.

I am an advert reader too. Skip the news entirely and go straight to the goods. Really good stuff. If only pyrex were still those prices. At least we can still find some of it if we are lucky. Smiles....Renee

Definitely the ads and incidentals get over the way of life far better than most of the news articles. Both the Cheshire toasts and the Parsley Potato Cakes sound yummy! When the children at school do World War II, parsnip sandwiches are often made, and the children really like them!

I love old newspapers. I'm a reporter, and I fear pretty soon there will be no newspapers :(

I must be an old fashioned lass. All sounds great, even the carrot!
Firm believer in the fatty breakfast theory, fried bread rocks. I'll pretend I am living in those days of cholesterol ignorance. X

The Cheshire toast sounds good, but I'll skip the 'extra fat'!

Love that first picture of the woman cleaning the steps! How things have changed indeed! I find the little advertisements interesting too. I feel like they tell you more about the times than anything.

Hope you are well.

best,
