Back To the Eighties

Here's a bit of a blast from the past - in fact these are from an old Good Housekeeping magazine from the 80s.

Opium perfume - I remember getting some of that for Christmas in the 80s - I was well chuffed, the packaging was pretty and unusual, but the scent was very overpowering!

Floral sofas and shiny black bathrooms- wow!

Very large shoulder pads - love the mustard and black!

This photo, an ad for Alexon, makes me think of Lorraine Chase - did anyone see her in Emmerdale last week - hasn't changed much!

Styles for men -  erm, no!  Good to look back, though, especially for those of us who endured lived through the 80s!

Love, Liz

I loved the 80s!! Of course, I love the fashions now too. But the 80s was an exciting time for me ... new boyfriend ... working for big law firms in Toronto ... lots & lots of nice suits with BIG shoulder pads (glad the shoulder pads went out!) ... and lots of clubs (I remember one with an all black bathroom like your photo). And the music was great! Scary that it's all considered 'retro' now ;) Wendy x

I remember spraying myself liberally with Opium once on a hovercraft back from France. It was a hideously choppy crossing and I felt really ill and the smell of that bloody perfume made me even worse *shudder*. xx

I think there's a lot of people who never moved on from that era! x

And to think I threw all my GH mags from the 80s out! I still have some Opium perfume but I find it rather 'heavy’ these day.

Oh! The 80s, marvellous to re-visit my student and early working days! I wasn't keen on Opium, but saved up for ages for Rive Gauche instead! My friend Hilary's parents had a black tied bathroom with pink grout, which I thought was marvellous and the height of sophistication!

I had the suits with the shoulder pads.

Fortunately, I managed to avoid the spandex leggings.

Funny how teal and burgundy have come back with a vengeance.

Now as long as the hairspray'd to death fringe doesn't reappear...

I remember sewing myself a jacket just like that mustard one. Mine was a petrolly blue colour. I remember I didn't wear it very often as I was continually smacking down those shoulder pads! Good times! :oD

Fragrances certainly were stronger then...now you can hardly tell when someone is wearing a scent. Shoulder pads...well, as someone who is only 5'2" I can well do without! I do think that fashion was a bit more elegant then, now everything is casual.

The shoulder pads on that mustard jacket are hilarious!

Gosh a real blast from the past. When I look at photos of me I had permed hair like Kevin Keegan and great big shoulder pads and blouses with Princess Diana frilled collars. Oh those were the days - not

Opium was such a strong perfume, wasn't it? I used to wear Cinnebar - can't stand the thought of it now!
Oh God love the 80s. Everything was so damn BIG! xxx

The 80's make me think of Madonna! My Mom had the floral couch and we all wore those hideous shoulder pads thinking they would make our hips looks slimmer! And those men's pleated pants - yuck! We all had the Madonna hair and acid wash jeans. Ha ha! xo

Hi Liz! The 80's seem disturbingly recent to me. Haha! Crazy how time just accelerates as you get older. Your travel to Canada looked good too. Nice pictures.
