Thanks, Maw Broon

Maw Broon, you are my hero!  I've never been great at making scones!  Cakes, pancakes, dumpling everything else I'm passable at, but scones have always been my downfall.  Until last week.

I decided that I would give scones another go, and picked a recipe book at random from my collection - Maw Broon's Cookbook.  Of course this Scottish stalwart had a recipe for scones - and it worked!  Yeah!

The scones look a bit rough, probably because I wasn't expecting them to be a success and didn't take much care in presentation, but they actually turned out edible!  Crumbly and delish with lashings of butter.

Chose a vintage plate (charity shop find) at random to put them on and found out that it had a Scottish connection too - made by Haviland, France for McDougall & Sons in Glasgow.

The Broons are a Scottish cartoon strip family made famous in the Sunday Post newspaper published by D C Thomson.  My Dad used to read my brother and I the cartoon, with all the different voices on Sunday evening at bed time and we used to get the Broons or Oor Wullie annual at Christmas.  I bought them for my sons too.  Love the older cartoon characters.  I've noticed recently that they have tried to update them - do not like that at all!  This is how the characters I love look.

The Broons D C Thomson
Going to see if my luck holds and make another batch of scones next week.

Love, Liz

I love the Broons! My dad was Scots and friends sent the Sunday post every week. Later I had it on order from the Newsagent so then my kids grew up on the Broons and oor Wullie too. Well done on the scones.

I have all of "her" cookbooks!

My Canadian born and raised daughter in law borrows them.

Hi Liz thanks for visiting. I think a lot of people have had this nasty bug, and until you really get over it I don't think you quite realise how it drains you. I'm feeling great again now and so happy to be back in my sewing room. My daughter and I do vintage fairs and have started collecting vintage fashion, so I'm experimenting learning to block 1940s and 1950s hats for when we do vintage shows,
It was so funny coming here and reading your post. I visit my sister just outside Edinburgh twice a year and bought both the Broons cookery books on one of my visits! I've read them quite a bit but confess not made any of the recipes yet. I will have to give them a try. Your scones look great. Jenny x

Good for you to finally have mastered the art of making scones! They're about the only kind of baking I'm good at, actually. And thanks for introducing me to the Broons ... xxx

Those scones look delicious! xxx

Awww, love the Broons! My brothers used to get the Broons and Oor Wullie annuals for their Christmas too. I think I have that cookbook somewhere, will need to have a look. I'm also hopeless at scones so perhaps I should try the recipe!
