Decor Dilemma - Help Needed!

I've got a bit of a decor dilemma!

I want to redecorate my downstairs shower room.  I love this little nightstand and large mirror above it which are already in there, but feel that I need a change.

Should I paint them white?  The wood panelling on the walls is painted off-white which I'm going to leave, but I want to put a floral paper above that.

Please help!  I look at your blogs and love the wonderful decor ideas - so what would you do with this room?

Love, Liz

I would paint the cupboard and the mirror a lovely soft blue,as I think blue and white are perfect for a bath/shower room.Whatever you decide,I'm sure it will look absolutely lovely. :0)

Hi Liz, if it were my bathroom, I would definitely paint all the wood white, including the towel rail. It will give the place a unified feeling and make it feel larger. Hope that was the answer you were wanting? Love Linda x

Because they have some lovely detail on what about painting grey underneath and white and top then sanding back around the edges and the detail? they will stand out against the background as well with a bit of grey and sanding but definitely paint them white :)

Have a delicious day!

Hi Liz, the night stand and mirrors both look like lovely pieces as they are but I say paint them white or even off-white. They then would go well with the white panelling.

I, personally, am very loathe to paint wood but I do think that painted pieces, if done correctly, look lovely. Right, that's not helped has it? Our downstairs loo also has wood panelling stained dark brown with cream walls above. We have a mirror with dark wood surround and a mahogany shelf on which I've put old books an old clock and a vase. It looks very gentlemen's clubbish. White and floral would look good and make it pretty and summery while our scheme makes it more wintry and cosy. Hope this helps with your thoughts.

Thanks - good of you all to take time to give me your ideas. Think I will go with painting white, but a soft blue would also look nice - hmm! The idea of putting another colour underneath and sanding the edges is also a great idea. So much to think about!

Might it not be a bad idea to get the floral paper and then decide what to paint...? I know that I would definately paint the towel rack, but You might want to leave one of the other pieces natural...as an accent. Maybe some new knobs and pulls on the little wash stand would look good too.

I'd probably do as other commenters have suggested and paint it a soft shade of blue (or pick out a colour from the pattern you're using for your wallpaper above the boarding) then paint white over the top and distress the edges to reveal hints of the base colour.

Hi Liz, I'm afraid I'm quite hopeless making decorating decisions, but if I had to choose I would go with the white/off white painted wood look, always looks fresh in a bathroom.......happy decorating. x

Oh Liz, I love your sweet little wash stand. The perfect place for a curvy pitcher and bowl. All of the wood pieces would be beautiful painted and distressed to bring out all the pretty details... a shade of white or a color from your wallpaper. Please give us a peek at the wallpaper. Warm Hugs,

Have you seen Karen's blog - 'The White Approach'?
She is the queen of white paint, distressing and adding splashes of colour here and there to enhance wood.
Check out some of her posts, the tags on the right of the blog should lead you to some of her makeover projects. I'm sure there will be something inspiring.

Definitely, I would paint them white. As a finishing touch I would probably add new porcelin or ceramic knobs to the door and drawer. Maybe with a floral imprint on them. Funny, how quick I can give out advise when asked, but I can't make a decision for myself to save my life! ;)
Looking forward to seeing what you decide. Have a great day!

Hi liz, I am sure you will get many responses to paint the wood, but I much prefer to leave wood pieces as are if they have any age to them. Once you have papered the wall panel above you may find that they look great.

I would probably paint the towel rail though as it is in a contrasting wood colour and looks like a newer piece :)

Have fun, whatever you decide. Tam x

Such a charming room and your pieces have beautiful lines! I would probably go withe, too, but they would be lovely left natural, too, if you brought in natural French style baskets with rolled white towels, natural colored soaps in ironstone bowls...you see where I'm going...sort of a French Farmhouse style! Can't wait to see what you do!

Paper it first, then decide Liz. I think that's the best idea because the wood might look quite nice au naturel against a pretty wall paper...alot easier to hold back on the paint now and paint later if need be rather than have to strip the paint later x

Paint them white / off-white. Your room will look bigger too. The cupboard is a great shape...go for it!

Firstly, hello all the way across the world and thankyou for popping onto my little blog. Now as you have seen I love colour but for your bathroom I can envisage a lovely french grey for both the cupboard and possibly the mirror as well.Would really make your ornaments and white items stand out. Pop over the paintmewhite.blogspot.com and see some of Sandy's fantastic paint-overs for inspiration. I would do the towel rail white. If not grey then maybe a greyish misty green.
Enjoy. melx

Yes, I love the idea of getting the paper and then deciding. It will look pretty either way Liz. Because they are really pretty pieces of furniture. Thanks for stopping by!

Hello Liz,
I think it's a great idea to paint them white, it will be a major change but more stylish !
Enjoy decorating,

Do things in stages...get the wallpaper and then have a look. Rather than painting everything white, maybe look at 'accessories' (said with a lisp)
All the home shows seem to change the complete look of a room with little bits and pieces.

I agree with A Treasured Past. I would paint the towel rack and leave the wash stand and mirror in wood tones. They may benefit from a fresh coat of varnish. I love the wood wash stand and mirror I have in my otherwise white bathroom. I think it's a classic look! Just my opinion. :-)
