OK - so she's a fictional character, but I still admire
her. The Broon (Brown) family live in a tenement flat at 10 Glebe
Street. They first appeared as a comic
strip in the Scottish weekend newspaper "The Sunday Post" in 1936 and
are still popular today.
The picture above shows Maw serving afternoon tea to a group of ladies - I actually remember when my Granny's friends came round they did not take off their coats or hats when they had a wee cuppa!

The Broons Annual (published by DC Thomson) was issued every second year,
alternating with the Oor Wullie Annual.
My brother and I got them every Christmas and just looking at the
characters brings back some lovely memories of Granny reading these stories to
us. My sons also got these annuals till very recently!
This wee book is fabulous, containing some recipes (old and
new), hints and tips for serving the perfect afternoon tea and some fabulous
old Broons pages from the annuals.
I was going to try one of the recipes to show you, but I've
not got enough butter (Maw Broon would not approve!) - will give it a go next
week.

Oh this is a wonderful trip down memory lane for me! Growing up in South Africa, my wee Gran in Stirling used to mail the Sunday Post out to us every week (no online/internet in those days!) and before my dad could read it, my sis & I used to open it and go straight to the comics to read Oor Wullie and The Broons. And every Christmas without fail, the annual would arrive - and I still have my now rather tatty collection on my bookshelf!
A few years ago, Hubby bought me Mrs Broon's Cookbook, which I love - am definitely going to add her Afternoon Tea book to my collection too. Thanks for invoking a happy memory, Liz.

Just fabulous, Liz! My eldest son's prized possession is a secondhand copy of a Broon's Annual. Don't know what year it is, but he's loved it forever. It probably is a bit beyond foxed, but I reckon he's still got it.
We all loved it but it was his. I don't even remember when or why he ended up with it, as I don't recall ever seeing them in the newsagents anywhere in Melbourne. Must have been a special purchase from Scotland to Aussie family members. All I know, Glen will never part with it. (His middle name is Douglas). ;)
Hello Liz. I don't know the Broons, but it is wonderful to hear that something like this is still going and is still well loved after all these years.
