Anyone know if these can be cleaned?

I need your help!

These lovely litle butter knives have been in my family for years.  They belonged to my Gran, passed on to my Mum and now I have them!

Don't think that they have ever been used and are now really discoloured.  Found out that the initials EP NS stand for electroplated nickel silver.  Does anyone know if it is possible to clean them?

Even the presentation box is lovely - look at this little clip - so cute!

Love, Liz

Hi Liz, just use a good silver polish and soft cloth and they will come up beautifully, they are the same as my Mum's set. xx

Should be able to clean them with silver polish, but be careful, the silver plating often isn't very thick and you clean down to the base metal. I did that on my Mother-in-law's tea service and you can now see the copper underneath in places.

Yes! We use ours all the time when we have visitors for afternoon tea. Mum used to have a full canteen of cuttlery for 12 place settings which was a bit of a pain, but it is nice to have the tea knife set.

I give the blades a wipe over with a silver polish once or twice a year (Cape Cod polishing cloths are great - from Lakeland). Yours may need a good rub, but try not to impregnate the handles with the polish - just wipe it off with a damp cloth, if it does get on there.
Then wash as below to get rid of any residue - polish on your cake is horrible!

The rest of the year, I just dip them in hand hot washing up water and wipe them with the dish cloth, each time they are used. Never leave them soaking in the water if the handles are bone (probably are) as it begins to split, but they are OK to be washed in the same way as the blades.

Dry them thoroughly with the tea towel and make sure they are completely dry (bone dry!). Polish with another dry cloth if any water marks stay on the blades just to make them look nice, before putting back in the box. Wipe again with a dry cloth before use if they have been put away for a few weeks.

They are beautiful, I presume that you clean them the same as you would silver but I am guessing I don't know that for a fact. Hope you manage to clean them and get to use them as I have said before they are truly beautiful.

When I bring things like this back from the boot sale or charity shop, hubby cleans them up with silver polish, it seems to bring them back to life.

Liz, those handles look as though they could be Bakelite. You may want to do a Google search on how to care/clean vintage flatware with Bakelite handles. I also think it's a good idea not to get the silver polish on the handles to prevent clouding. Hugs,

seems like everyone else has recommended silver polish, that was what I would have said too. They should polish up really nicely. I just starting working on an old teapot; it's amazing how much better it looks. Show us pictures when you're done!
